July 25, 200817 yr i just received a prebuilt unRaid box off of ebay. it came loaded with 10 ata 250GB drives and software 4.2.1. i upgraded to 4.3.3 and added 2 ata drives ((1) 250 for data and (1) 120 for cache), i also added (2) sata drives 400gb. the system starts up and says it is doing a parity check. i refresh the browser every couple of minutes until it gets to like 10% and then i go to work. When i leave it says that there is about 500 minutes left to go. when i get home from work i try to log in with the browser but i get nothing. i have a separate screen and keyboard hooked up to the box and have seen that the command prompt is still active. i have copied the syslog and was hoping that someone here can help me with it. i have very little experience with linux so i need some assistance. i have done the mem test and with 9 passes found no errors. thanks in advance christopher
July 25, 200817 yr Welcome to the community. Someone will jump in and help with your specific issue, but in the future, try making only one change at a time: either upgrading the software or adding drives. It is also advisable to run a parity check before doing either. Bill
July 25, 200817 yr Author thank you, tom has already responded in an email and as said that drive 12 is full of errors. i have removed it and now i am at 35% done. i am still able to see the box so i think we are good. thanks
July 25, 200817 yr You have a problem with only one drive, everything else seems OK. But that one drive is probably bad, is causing a lot of errors, including timeouts that seriously hurt your performance, and finally kill the channel, taking down the other drive on the same channel. The bad drive is Disk 12, hkl - Maxtor_6Y250P0_Y64D3MTE. Here are some good links for troubleshooting that drive: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting#Hard_drive_failures http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Best_of_the_Forums http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ#Hard_Drives Edit: just noticed you have already gotten help. The links above may still be useful if you wish to test the drive. I recommend getting a smartctl report on it, then running the smartctl test on it. The smartctl tool is now included with unRAID.
