Upgrading to unraid 5

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I have been using UnRaid for 2-3 years but during the last year I had to abandon it because of some personal reasons. At that time I was using UnRaid 4.7 and UnRaid 5 was still in a more primitive form. Now, I want to move to UnRaid 5 (mainly for the 3Tb HDs but also just because I need to upgrade stuff now and then :)) but since I have missed a lot I would like some help and info. So, here it goes:

[*]Is UnRaid 5 safe for use? This is my main concern. (I mean, is there a chance of data corruption, assuming, of course, that I do not deviate from the upgrade instructions)

[*]Should I use v5.0-rc8a or is an earlier version more stable?

[*]I have unMenu, cache_dirs and various packages installed. if I change the go script just by commenting the 3 lines that invoke them, would that be enough?

cd /boot/packages && find . -name '*.auto_install' -type f -print | sort | xargs -n1 sh -c

/boot/unmenu/uu

/boot/cache_dirs -d 3 -m 3 -M 4 -w -F

[*]After I reboot and check that everything works fine, is it OK to uncomment the previous lines? Or would it be better if I completely removed the extra packages and reinstalled them from scratch?

Thanks in advance

My immediate reaction is that if you need nfs, dont install version 5.  I am unsure about the packages, but I installed unmenu clean and I believe there is a specific version of cache_dirs for 5 that has a GUI.

Other than nfs stale file handles, v5 has been good for me, but the nfs issue is super annoying when you are trying to use linux.

It is safe. If you see anything that does not look correct stop and ask for help. DO NOT click on format. If any disks show as unformatted stop and ask for help.

Use v5.0-rc8a.

Yes.

Just uncomment.

Getting conflicting testimony to the stale nfs issues ???

Has 5rc done away with the stale file handles or not?

I'd use it, and am. I'd use the Simple Features plug-in and maybe some of the other small plug-ins. I can't speak to NFS as I don't use it, my Linux boxes have Samba installed. So far, no issues and running well on rc8a...

Thanks everyone for your answers.

I use Samba not NFS, so it looks like I am good to go.

I have not used SimpleFeatures since it seems to be new and Unraid5-specific. Does it perform all unMenu functions or are both addons complementary? I know I will find soon enough but I can't wait :)

I do not believe that simple features has everything that unmenu does just yet.  Pluss unmenu give you a slew of extra links with information, although i know some is now available in standard unraid but not all.

As for Samba, I am sure it would work fine as it has on my windows box, I was merely stating it as a known issue for me.  I will just have to swith to SMB mounts now instead.  On the Samba front though, does one still have to install the new version to resolve some of the issue that were had or is v2(?) included in RC8a?

As a note, I use smb shares with my PCH a-110 and it stopped working till I realized I need to used a new user account.  I added the account and can access the data again, but now playback is jerky at times and audio cuts out.  This is what sort of prompted the question about updated samba. Thanks
