October 27, 201213 yr I'm building an unRAID NAS on a HP Proliant N40L (mini tower with 4 HD slots). I want to use 3 disks as storage and the 4th disk as parity. I'd also like to run programs like torrent and Plex, but after reading the forums it seems that using a cache drive would be best to avoid shortening the life of the USB pendrive. I have a 500GB USB hard disk lying around which I thought I could use as a cache drive, but I'm not sure this is possible. Besides, when I plugged in the disk, in the Disk Management tab in unMenu, even though the USB would show up on the bottom, the "create reiserfs on..." button I've seen in other people's screenshots didn't show up, so I'm not even sure if I'm doing something wrong. I'm running unRAID 5.0-rc8a and unMenu 1.5 . I'm a total noob to unRAID so please forgive me if this has been answered a million times already, but my google-fu is weak...

You cannot create a file system on a disk until it is partitioned. (therefore, no button in unMENU) I'm not sure if unRAID will let you assign a USB drive as a cache drive. (probably will not) unRAID normally partitions and creates the needed file system on an assigned cache drive. No need for you do to do it at all manually. Joe L.
October 27, 201213 yr If you haven't fitted a DVD/CD in the top blanked off slot, you can fit a 5th HD in there. You just need a sata cablke to the port on the mobo and a molex to sata power vonverter. Instructions are on the interwebs somewhere.
