October 27, 201213 yr I've not created my array yet - I am preclearing another disk before I begin. However the one that I have already pre-cleared doesn't seem to be spinning down automatically, despite having a 'Default spin down delay' set under 'Settings -> Disk Settings'. I did see the thread suggesting changing this value, clicking apply, and then changing it back to your desired value and clicking apply again. I have tried this. Manually clicking spin down does work, but wanted to check if this is expected behaviour. Should the disk spin down automatically when the disk isn't assigned to a slot in the array or when the array is not started? Thanks in advance for any advice offered!
October 27, 201213 yr It's the same with me, my spare drive just sits there spinning until I manually spin it down. I've always assumed the spin down delay settings only affected disks in the array so assume it's fine.

October 27, 201213 yr This is correct. spin down is only valid for array disks. I cannot remember of the top of my head, but there is a command you can put in your GO script that will spin it down.. Personally I preclear and then remove the power connector, that way I am sure that the drive will remain spun down..
October 27, 201213 yr Author Thanks so much for confirming this for me, hopefully will prove useful for other new users too. I will follow your advice and add a line to my go script to spin my spare drive down once I've got the array built
