July 31, 200817 yr Almost all of my user shares span each of my array's 8 disks. This seemed like a great idea at the time, but now I see the folly of my ways. I want to avoid having every disk spin up just because I'm browsing my TV Shows user share. Since I'm also expanding my array, I do have a fair bit of empty space, probably 2 TB or so. What I want to do is to consolidate my user shares so that they span a single disk or two or three. A couple of questions to help me achieve this: If I remove disks from user share set up screen, I assume that the data will still reside on the disks until I move or delete it, right? Would it be better to move the data first and then remove individual disks form the user share configuration? Is there an easy way to move the data to consolidate the user shares onto discrete disks? An example: Becauuse of the way my split levels work, some episodes of a TV show are on different disks as other episodes of the same show. I have to move - via command line, or through windows, or Midnight Commander - individual episodes over to the destination disk. It would be great if there were a way to move all episodes from my TV shows share (mapped to drive T) T:\Life on Mars\Season1\ to Disk1\TV_Shows\Life on Mars\Season 1\ , in one go regardless of which disk they episodes were on. Is this possible? Of course, I'd like to do this for all shows and make the TV_Shows share part of disks 1 and 2 only of my array, and so on for my other shares and disks.
January 22, 201016 yr Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm in pretty much the same situation with some of my media. I'm using directory cache, so for the most part (eg. Blu-Ray rips) it's not a problem because I can browse directory contents without having to wait for drives to spin up & don't care that it may take a few seconds for an 90+ minute movie to start!. However with some media, for example my HD home-movies, it's frustrating to watch a clip of the kids and then have to wait for a drive (12 now) to spin up to watch the next clip. Thumbnail preview in Windows and the WD TV is also painful. Media is fairly well spread over the server so something like this would be great: T:\Life on Mars\Season1\ to Disk1\TV_Shows\Life on Mars\Season 1\ , in one go regardless of which disk they episodes were on. Is this possible? Obviously I need to get my user shares and (cache) included/excluded discs in order once/before this is done! Cheers
