Downgrade back to 3.0 - any danger?

Featured Replies

OK - I have enough.  >:(

4.3.3 never worked for me. My hardware and the new kernel don't seem to be compatible. 4.2.4 keep hanging / rebooting randomly. I can't stand it anymore. Yes, it was a little bit faster, but, all the issues I have are too much to bear. I am going back to 3.0 which was VERY stable for me. I have tried for the past two weeks to make this work properly and I can't so, I am going back where I was.

If I do this, is there anything I should be aware of that could be a problem? Is it as simple as just copying bzimage and bzroot?

Thanks for letting me know.

I don't remember your hardware, but are you perchance running a multicore proc?  One user is having difficulties with a particular hardware configuration and has evidence pointing to a unicore proc making it work.

Nope - single core.

I am having the same issue as these folks on this thread (my post is the last one on page 4)

So I stepped back to 4.2.4 - and the array keeps rebooting for no apparent reason or just locks up. I don't want to investigate further at this point, I was very happy for two years with my V3.0 and it was working perfectly, never had a down period whatsoever. Yes it was a little slow, but I can live with that.

I just want to make sure that when I downgrade, I don't lose any data because of "some special formatting" on 4.2.4 vs 3.0 (it there are any).

Well - here it goes.

I downgraded to V3.0 and system is stable once again.

I guess I'll wait till... 5.0 maybe... lol.

I would contact Tom and ask for formal support. It is not unreasonable to assume that versions this old will be deprecated at some point and you dont want to be left stuck on an unsupported version.

I guess I'll wait till... 5.0 maybe... lol.

If 4.3 or 4.2 did not satisfy you, I doubt 5.0 will either.

I suggest you work with Tom with the 4.2/4.3 issue.

I may do that later on. I will be following the thread where some people don't seem to make 4.3.3 work on their hardware either. If they find a way around it, then I will migrate again. If not, then one day I'll change my hardware to something more current, and then I will be able to upgrade. So far, I don't see any reasons (besides speed) to migrate. Like I said 3.0 is EXTREMELY stable for me. No ghosts in the machine - no crashes - no losses of data, they way I just like it. Would I like more speed, yeap - but I'll wait.

My current hardware is not that old - P5VM motherboard and 2 Promise SATA controllers. I am not ready to spend more dollars right now on hardware just to run a newer rev of software, not yet anyway.
