November 10, 201213 yr im trying to upgrade from 4.7 to 5.0. my server has worked flawlessly for a few years but i want to upgrade it now. some research has led me to believe my mobo might be whats causing me grief. i have a m4a785m asus mobo with a athos nic on it. everything appears to be good when i upgraded however when i go to the ip adress shown in ifconfig eth0 in my web browser i cannot connect and none of my media players etc find it. i also have the same issue when i install my trendnet r8169 nic instead. i tried all the diffrant 5.0 builds and none seem to work. do i need a diffrant nic or is it more likely a network setting thats changed? thx
November 10, 201213 yr Author Can anyone confirm if there is a 5.0 build that should work with my addon nic card?
November 10, 201213 yr The Realtek® 8112L NIC on the MB should work. Post a attach a syslog. What IP address is being assigned?
November 11, 201213 yr Author its giving me 192.168.1.76 but i have tried changing it. if i boot my desktop with the flash drive it works fine? as soon as i put it back into my server i can not connect. thx for your help syslog.zip
November 11, 201213 yr It appears to be getting a correct address: Nov 10 19:51:48 Tower dhcpcd[1039]: eth0: offered 192.168.1.78 from 192.168.1.254 Nov 10 19:51:48 Tower dhcpcd[1039]: eth0: acknowledged 192.168.1.78 from 192.168.1.254 Nov 10 19:51:48 Tower dhcpcd[1039]: eth0: checking for 192.168.1.78 Is 192.168.1.254 the correct address of your router? sdc and sdd are having issues. Do those drives share a power slitter or a SATA card?
November 11, 201213 yr Author 192.168.1.254 is my router adress. sdc is a older disc that has recently had a few errors showing. not sure if thats why. sdd is connected to a pci card with sde
November 11, 201213 yr 192.168.1.254 is my router adress. sdc is a older disc that has recently had a few errors showing. not sure if thats why. sdd is connected to a pci card with sde Attach SMART reports for sdc, sdd, and sde. A single bad drive could be the problem.
November 19, 201213 yr Author so after giving up i decided to try this again. it appears dgaschk is correct. it is a disk issue. with 2 of my discs unhooked the server works fine. as soon as i connect either of the 2 disks it wont allow me to connect. i have smart logs attached for the suspect disks. if anyone can see anything wrong please let me know. there still in warranty. thx smart_sda.txt smart_sdd.txt
November 19, 201213 yr Both drives have pending sectors, but none reallocated. I'd suspect cabling or power as a common cause. The drives may be rehabilitated by running a preclear on each of them. This will force the pending sectors to be written and hopefully none will become reallocated. UnRAID requires that no disk have any pending sectors in order to function properly. A few reallocated is not an issue as long as the value remains stable.
November 19, 201213 yr The disks may be fine. I'd pre-clear them and then look at the values for pending sectors. If they go to zero the the issue is not with the drives.
November 19, 201213 yr Author I've recently resynced parity after removing 2 unused disks from my array using the initconfig command. will that possibly cause a problem when I clear and rebuild the data on those drives. Thx again for your help
November 19, 201213 yr unRAID cannot rebuild a drive after initconfig has be used. In any case, unRAID cannot rebuild 2 drives, it is only able to recover a single failed drive. Run pre-clear on the drives and the examine SMART reports. If all is well, the drives can then be used to expand the array.
November 19, 201213 yr Author Sorry I think my wording was bad. What I mean is I just rebuilt parity so are those disks error gonna be copied to the parity drive now. If I replaced one for example with a new disk should it rebuild properly? I'm worried if I pre clear one disk at a time am I gonna loose the data on rebuild
November 19, 201213 yr Not likely. They both have unreadable (pending) sectors. In order to rebuild a single drive all of the other drives have to be readable. You could attempt to rebuild the drive with the greater number of pending sectors but I don't give it much chance of success. However, if one of the drives is rebuilt successfully then the other drive can be rebuilt.
November 19, 201213 yr Author Would I be able to copy the data off those drives to my desktop with a better chance of recovery? Then after pre clearing transfer them back that way I only loose whatever was on those sectors rather then pre clear then fail on rebuild causing total loss of entire disk
November 20, 201213 yr That may be the best option. You could try a reiserfsck recovery program for windows if the the disk is unreadable using a reiserfsck driver.
November 20, 201213 yr Author The server works fine currently with those disks on 4.7 however the problem disks are holding archived stuff that I don't access oftan.there probably is corrupt files that I haven't touched since the issues occurred. I'll just try copying straight to windows and see what happens. Hopefully those bad sectors don't hold a lot of files
November 20, 201213 yr Author If I was to just plug one of the drives into my windows PC will it recognize it and allow me to copy the files? If not is there a free program that will allow me to do that. Thx again
November 20, 201213 yr You'll need to install a reiserfsck driver. There are several free ones you can download.
November 21, 201213 yr Author so i have removed all the data from the 2 drives however when i try to preclear them the preclear scrirpt just freezes up right away. have tried some other disks and they preclear properly? any suggestions
November 21, 201213 yr Author so the drives have precleared succefully does that mean they should be ok now or whoud i be running further tests ? thx
