Was thinking about using it with this expander http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816117207 Am I on the right track?
November 17, 201213 yr I bought 2 of the SAS expanders from newegg several months ago. Glad to see newegg is selling them again as not to long ago they were listed as discontinued. The price is either exactly what I paid or just slightly off. I bought my 5 IBM M1015s off of ebay for allot less than the new ones on newegg but they were used. seanant also sells them here on the forum when he gets some in to sell.
November 17, 201213 yr Author Is there any big difference between the board numbers? As in the one on Newegg is an IBM 46M0831. There are other numbers of M1015's out there. Does it matter which ones to get or any specific #'s to avoid, etc?

Does it matter which ones to get or any specific #'s to avoid, etc? The numbers are just IBM stock numbers and are possibly just different production runs. You might find the one on newegg has newer firmware than the used ones on ebay. I don't believe there is any real difference between the models.
November 17, 201213 yr Author After doing some research it appears the only difference between 46M0831 vs 46M0861 I can find is the 831 is a factory installed option and the 861 is a replacement card and sold to resellers. I came across this site that gives a whole bunch of details about the card, options and flashing, etc. http://www.servethehome.com/ibm-m1015-part-1-started-lsi-92208i/ Thank you for the idea to check ebay. For some reason that never even crossed my mind. I love Newegg and sometimes Amazon, but Ebay might win here!
November 17, 201213 yr Those cards are also sometimes sold by folks on this forum so worth touching base here as well...
November 17, 201213 yr A used server pull was fine for me but that may not be true for everyone. After all most used purchases don't have much if any warranty. The newegg card has a 1 year warranty. So new can be better if you want the piece of mind.
