Hitachi Desktar Preclear Noise?

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

I'm preclearing a Hitachi Desktar 2TB drive and it's making a really strange grind/mechanical noise every 20 seconds of so.

This is the 2nd Desktar 2TB in a row that has had the same problem, so I'm not sure if it's a "problem" or just normal?

Any help would be much appreciated!

(IF this is "normal" during preclear, does the noise go away once the drive is added to the array?)

I'm pretty sure that's normal. As I understand it, the script does some sort of seek operation every so often during the reads.

Thanks,

I won't hear that noise all the time once the drive passes Preclear and I add it to my array with I?

I've never heard it with any of my other Hitachi drives...

no drive should make a "grinding" noise.  Seeking from track to track, yes, but grinding sounds like a mechanical issue.

How loud is it? I couldn't hear much of anything on your sound clip. My 3T drives made a noise every so often when preclearing. It wasn't very loud but it was there.
