November 18, 201213 yr Hello, 20 Drive Beast (tower) Mobo: Supermicro X9SCM-F-O CPU: Intel Pentium G620 (feel free to upgrade to Intel i3 2100 or other Intel i3 2100 series CPUs) RAM: Kingston 8GB DDR3 1333 (8GB of RAM may be overkill, but I can’t find any compatible 4GB kits!) PSU: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W Case: Antec 1200 Hot Swap Drive Bays: Norco SS-500 x 4 (Two alternatives are listed below. Both have their pros and cons. You can read my review of all three cages here.) Icy Dock MB455SPF-B x 4 (replacement option 1) Supermicro CSE-M35T-1B x 4 (replacement option 2) Fans: Coolink SWiF2-801 80mm x 4 *optional (Norco SS-500/Icy Dock MB455SPF-B fan upgrade if quieter performance is desired) GELID Solutions FN-PX09-20 92mm x 4 *optional (Supermicro CSE-M35T-1B fan upgrade if quieter performance is desired) SATA Expansion Cards: Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 8-Port SAS/SATA Add-on Card x 2 IBM ServerRAID M1015 x 2 – Replacement Option (As the Supermicro cards are difficult to obtain outside of the US, unRAID forum user seanant is currently selling these M1015 cards internationally. They are reported to work well with unRAID, though I personally have not used them.) Cables: 0.5m 30AWG Internal Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male w/ Latch to SATA 7pin Female (x4) Forward Breakout Cable x 4 No SATA Cables required (6 included with motherboard) I pretty much followed this exact build suggested by Raj, except I swapped out the PSU for this one below http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006 Going through the build - I'm not able to get both 4pin molex connectors to each drive bay/sata cage. From what I understand, it's for redundant power. Is this true? I guess, is it necessary to connect both? and if so, any recommendations on where to get the necessary cables? Thanks edit: found some on monoprice, so I guess I'm looking for advice on whether or not to pull the trigger. thanks again!
