server migration

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've recently acquired some new hardware and bought some new 3TB drives.

I want to rebuild with these new items a new unraid server from scratch.

But in the process I also want to add some drives containing data, from my other unraid server.

Can I just mix these new and old drives (containing data) without the risk of loss of data ?

How I'm planning to do things would be the following:

Add new drives to new array, without parity disk assigned.

Start array and let unraid format the disks (preclear already done).

Shut down array.

Add old drives (already formatted and containing data) to array.

Start array with mix of new and old array.

Stop array.

Assign parity disk.

Start array and let parity build start.

Would this be okay or would I have to transfer the data of the old disks manually to empty ones in the new array.

Unraid would not format or clear the old disks containing data which were formatted on a previous system now would it ?

Thanks for your reply(s)

The drives with data should be recognized by the new system and they will not be cleared. If there is a message indicating that the drives from the old system will be cleared, STOP and ask for help.
