N40L + 3 4tb + 8gb setup

Featured Replies

Hi, looking to build 3 4tb into my N40L and use it as a simple NAS serving windows and WDTV media players.

Was looking at freenas, but really just the snapshot and simple nas software rather than the overhead of ZFS.

Does anyone has this type of build ? I understand that I'll need version 5 for the drives, is stable enough and have the comms drivers to support the connected hosts.

Thanks - Ian

Hi - I have 2 N40L's one has 5 * 2Tb data and 1 * 2TB parity, its loaded with movies, music, documents, pictures and is accessed by windows PC's and through a couple of different media players over a wired network - all works really well. The second machine is for backups of all the house PC's, couch, Sab etc and has crashplan ionstalled to back up to their cloud, again all works well. UnRiad will be a good selection for a simple NAS and give you room to do other stuff if you want in the future.

Oh and the support i have had on here has been first rate :-)

Search for N40L, a bunch of threads should pop up. I recently got N40L myself, great little box. There is a modified bios out there that will let you use the sata connector that goes to the top bay at full speed. Can also get another bracket that will let you put 2 3.5" drives at the top, so total of 6 drives.

Costwise the 4tb just aren't cheap enough yet for me. Will have 2 3tb drives and 4 2tb in a few days.

Went with the n40l after reading this thread http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=11585.0

Not so cheap to get 3tb drives in Australia but BHphot have 4TB Deskstar 3.5" SATA III Internal Hard Drive at 189 USD which would be 631.66 landed in Australia with postage, so 210 each.

Typical Australia Prices are 3TB greens for 149, red 198, making the 4tb tosh looking good value
