New Permissions

Featured Replies

I have done all the updates since unraid 4.6 all the way up to the current unraid 5.0-rc8a. At no time have i ever done or seen this New Permissions. Do i need to run this?

I have just resonantly added a new 2TB hard drive into my server. However since then it seems laggy and slow to respond to me selecting options like (Stop will take the array off-line and shutting down takes several second for it even register the button selection. Before the hard drive was installed it was instantaneous. This new hard drive is the first one i have added in a long time all the others were installed from the first build running i believe 4.6 for me.

Then i saw this New Permissions thing and wondered. So i thought i would post it up and get some help from all you guys that know more about this than me.

Thanks.

New Permissions

This is a one-time action to be taken after upgrading from a pre-5.0 unRAID server release to version 5.0. It is also useful for restoring default ownership/permissions on files and directories when transitioning back from Active Directory to non-Active Directory integration.

This will start a background process that goes to each of your data disks and cache disk and change all file and directory ownership (uid/gid) to 99/100, i.e., to nobody/users. In addition it sets permissions as follows:

For directories:

  -rwxrwx---

For read/write files:

  -rw-rw---

For readonly files:

  -r--r-----

This process can take a long time if you have many files.

Yes I want to do this

You need to do it before upgrading to a V5 release, if you do not then you might run into permissions issues, it is a bit dependent on how you are setup, I think I can imagine situations where you might not notice that you haven't run it.

The upgrade instructions from 4.7 to any version 5 specifies running New Permissions.

Thanks for the reply's.

I guess i should run it as i don't remember seeing that when i upgraded from 4.6.

Could it cause any problems if i run it now? I don't have any permission issues.

I'm running 5.0-rc8a now. Will it be OK to run the permissions now?

Thanks.

You need to do it before upgrading to a V5 release

The new permissions function does not exist in the 4.x series. It's listed as part of the upgrade process to be done after starting a 5.x array for the first time after an upgrade from 4.x.

Yes.  It would fix any permissions issues you might have but not know about.  You can run it at any time and is the suggested step when you have a permissions issue whether you just upgraded or did it a LOOOOONG time ago.
