New Build for a New User New to unRAID

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've been lurking the community for a few weeks now, trying to familiarize myself with unRAID. I'm the cusp of taking the leap into NAS and unRAID looks to be the right avenue for me.

That said, before I take the plunge I just want to see if anyone has any feedback for me on the build I've put together:

What is your budget? No particular budget in mind, but would like to keep costs for the build down as much as possible. Ideally not looking to spend more than say $450-500 for the system itself (not including storage).

How many drives/how much capacity? I'm purchasing new drives to start out; planning on 3 3TB drives (1 parity, 2 data). This should satisfy my data needs for a good while.

Expandability? No specific long term goals in mind, but would definitely like to keep my options for future growth and not limit my ability to add drives based on my component choices now.

Add ons? Absolutely. My primary use for the unRAID box will be as a Plex Media Server. Additionally, I'd like to run AirVideo server (for smaller media bits that I don't want to clutter my PMS with, but still stream to my devices), so transcoding will be a factor. Finally, I'd also like to look into hosting a small Minecraft server (using some of the techniques described in various other threads on these forums, like this one. This is less important as an overall function (i.e. not a dealbreaker if I can't get it running), but it's my reasoning for looking at 8gb of RAM below.

Green drives? Yes.

Spare parts? Nope!

Here are the parts I'm looking at using:

CPU:  Intel Core i3-3220 3.3GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($119.99 @ Newegg)

Motherboard:  ASRock Z77M Micro ATX  LGA1155 Motherboard  ($97.55 @ Newegg)

Memory:  Crucial Ballistix sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory  ($27.99 @ Newegg)

Case:  Antec Three Hundred Two ATX Mid Tower Case  ($69.99 @ Newegg)

Power Supply:  Antec Neo Eco 520W 80 PLUS Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply  ($58.98 @ Newegg)

Total: $374.50

(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions!

Looks fine, the only thing I would change would be the case.

Look into using an antec 900 or nexus prominent 9.  They will allow you to expand later on to 15 drives should you so choose.
