Strange lock ups with Unraid v5.0-rc8a

Featured Replies

Hi there, i'm having some wierd issues with Unraid, where it will lock up and freeze (loss of network, no response on the keyboard), the only way to return it to an operational state is to reboot it.

Here is my setup

Unraid Pro ver: 5.0-rc8a, installed on a Kingston DT_101 8gb USB drive

motherboard: Asus p8z77-v LK

CPU: intel i3-2120

Memory: 16GB of corsair low profile memory (4x4gb)

SAS Controllers: 3x Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8

Power supply: 850watt PSU

18 HDD's of various sizes and ages + 1 Parity and + Cache (Cache drive is no longer in use)

the server has been running great for several months, but shortly after i changed my shares to NOT use my Cache Drive (which i think is unrelated to the issue i'm having) i've been experiencing strange freezes and lockups after a few hours of operation.

I've run a memory test over night without any errors.

I've formatted my Kingston USB and reinstalled the same version of unraid (v5.0-rc8a) without any addons, and experienced the same issue.

I have also tested the HDD's, a couple of them had 1-3 Unallocated sector errors, which i'm tempted to replace, except that when the system is rebooted after it locks up, it starts its parity check/verify and it ends up fixing a few sync errors found, but then locks up before the parity check/verify is complete.

I thought it might be a power supply issue, but i put a killawatt on the server, and its only drawing 180-200watts of the 850watt the power supply is capable of.

The server is connected to a APC UPS, so the power should be regulated (dirty power shouldn't be an issue).

I've also watched the syslog as the system has frozen/locked up, and i hasn't displayed anything of use.

I've also checked CPU temperature with 'sensors' while its under heavy use, and it never gets over +47C.

I'm not sure what else to check before spending some money and swapping the Power supply and memory.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Hey Dgaschk, i've gone through the UEFI bios on my asus motherboard, and I've tried to match the settings in the Intel Bios page.

But the problem still exists.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks!

just swapped out the memory with another kit, same problem :\

I'm going to try swapping the CPU and motherboard out next.

Here's hoping that its one of those!

thanks

and as strangely as this problem started, after swapping all hardware (except the drives and the controller cards (and backplanes), a motherboard bios flash appears to have fixed this issue, or atleast its stopped locking up for now.

On a side note the Asus P8Z77-LK motherboard has some weird behavior with the Super Micro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 cards.

If you use one of the cards in the 3rd pcie-16x slot (which will normally function at 2x due to chipset limitations), and then you force the 3rd pcie slot to 4x in the bios (which disables one of the pcie-1x slots) the performance on the 3rd pcie-16x slot drops to nothing, like 2-4MB/s write performance. When i undo the change and drop the slot back to the defaulted pcie-2x speeds, i get 50-60MB write.

Thanks for all the help guys!
