Do you need to run Smartctl -t regularly???

I read all of the maintenance posts and know I should run a parity check from time to time. My question is if I run a parity check on say a monthly basis do I need to run the smartctl -t tests or do I just run them if I get errors on the parity check???

It will not hurt to run the SMART tests monthly.  Many errors they detect will not show up in a parity check.  I would run the "short" test at least.
