December 5, 201213 yr Can someone confirm I did things correctly. I'm adding a 2TB drive into my system. I did first preclear the drive. Now when I added the drive, while the disk is being formatted, the array and shares are offline. Is that correct? Although its alot faster than having to wait for it preclear as well, you cannot access the shares while a drive is being formatted?
December 5, 201213 yr I believe this is the case yes. Not sure of today's versions, but in the past the format was performed while the array was online and available. (It was a mid 4.X release when I last added a drive to the array) Joe L.
December 6, 201213 yr The format should take only a few seconds and the array is online. It sound like the pre-clear was not successful and the disk is being cleared by unRAID. The array will be offline until the disk is cleared.

The array will be offline until the disk is cleared. I've had it take (what felt like) more than 2 minutes. But the WebUI was always responsive. I'm guessing you're right in that the preclear either failed, or something else was done with the disk between the preclear and being added to the array.
December 6, 201213 yr Ya, a format of a big drive can take minutes and not just a few seconds. I too would have thought the array would be available since you can start the array and all the other disks can be mounted and accessed without even doing the format, but anything is possible.
