December 6, 201213 yr I use WDTV Live Plus to stream media, when I set this up a couple of years back I streamed from ReadyNAS devices and SMB couldn't handle 1080p without stuttering. I'm currently transferring all media to unRaid and have a couple of questions: [*]Am I correct that with unRaid (latest 5 version) that SMB and NFS are mutually exclusive? I can only run one at a time? [*]I'm currently transferring media via SMB, in order to switch to NFS, it's just a simple matter of going into settings and enabling NFS?
December 6, 201213 yr i'm still sort a newbie to that area as well but in my learning so far; I had to enable NFS on the server and then went into each share i wanted as NFS and enabled it there too... the catch was, that until I rebooted the after turning it on in the control panel of unraid, nfs didn't start working. (so turn it all on, reboot )

With unRAID, it seems like SMB has about the same 'effective' transfer rate as NFS. So I don't know if there is quite the advantage the NFS had over SMB on some of the earlier NAS solutions. However, it is much more involved issue in setting up NFS on the client end than setting up SMB. I'm currently transferring media via SMB, in order to switch to NFS, it's just a simple matter of going into settings and enabling NFS? You have to turn on NFS on both the 'Settings' page and on the 'Shares' page (Click on the 'share name' to get to the NFS settings for each share that you want to use NFS with.) Just leave all of your SMB settings alone when you are doing it.
December 6, 201213 yr Author Thank you. I guess after all my media is transferred, I'll test 1080p streaming over SMB first to see if that works before turning on NFS.
December 6, 201213 yr "1080p" doesn't mean anything useful when describing the data you are streaming. What maximum bitrate do you need?
