December 11, 201213 yr I want to hopefully add a cache drive to my setup to improve some speeds. In reading the create explanations Here, I have question on the Warm Spare setup. My parity Drive is a 2TB drive, but all my other drives are currently 1TB in size. Do I need need another 2TB drive to setup a Warm spare? Or can I only setup a 'Tepid' spare with a 1TB drive?
December 11, 201213 yr Until you add a drive larger than 1TB to a data slot, you can use a 1TB drive as the parity drive if your current 2TB fails. The parity drive only has to be equal or larger than the largest drive in the protected array. Unraid would complain that the parity slot previously had a 2TB and won't give you the option to automatically rebuild parity on the 1TB until you set a new configuration, but since it's the parity slot, that wouldn't matter.
December 11, 201213 yr Author Thanks, I know the parity only has to be a 1TB, but can I use a 1TB as Warm spare? This from the Cache post Warm Spare (Note: requires that your cache drive be as large or larger than your parity drive and your largest data drive) I'd like to keep the 2TB parity drive alone. And with all other drives currently 1TB. Can I use a 1TB as Warm cache? Or must it be a 2TB? Any new drives I buy will 2TB or bigger, so it only makes sense for me keep the parity drive alone.
December 12, 201213 yr The instructions assume that there is a data drive as large as the parity drive. In your case, the 1T can be a spare until you add a 2T data drive.

So I can use my existing 1TB drives now for a cache, and than would need to change it later when adding my first 2TB drive.

If you want it to also be warm spare then yes.
