December 13, 201213 yr I have the option to build my first unraid server with either a dual core intel cpu or a quad core amd cpu. My quad core is already set up in a box and going with xbmc on it. My dual core setup needs to be put together in my case I've purchased for my unraid server. Is it worth me tearing apart the quad core setup to use it as the unraid over just putting together the dual core setup? Performance for the unraid is the reason I'm asking. I know in most applications the quad core will outdo the dual core, but as far as a file server and yalls experience, is it worth me stopping what is working great and already serving as my file server, to change out the parts?
December 13, 201213 yr I'd leave it as it is. unRAID runs fine on a single-core. Unless you are running lots of add-on applications that use multi-core CPUs more effectively (specifically coded to take advantage of the extra cores) there will be no noticeable difference between a dual-core and a quad-core CPU. On the other hand, XBMC can take advantage of the quad-core. I'd leave it for XBMC.
December 13, 201213 yr Author Well great. When I get home I'm going to put it together. I've got my 3 new 3TB hdds precleared and ready. Thanks for your advice.
