Audio output from unRAID server itself?

Featured Replies

I just got my unRAID server up and I must say its a great little product.  Forgive me that this is a newbie question but is the OS capable of playing audio from the server itself?  The reason I ask is that I am looking to output the sound through a whole house audio system.  I tried installing some media players via a telnet session but I cannot seem to get any of them to launch and figured I was doing something wrong.   :)

Any feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated.

To clarify, which of the following are you trying to do:

* Output audio from the Unraid so you can put it into the audio-in on your whole house system that is located next to the unraid - the whole house system then distributes music (probably) via speaker wires to each room

* Output the audio stream over the network so you can use individual media devices in each room where the media device decodes it and sends it to the speakers/amp

I think you are asking for #1, right?

Cheers,

Bill

#1, thanks Billped!

I doubt you'll get #1, only second point is possible easely. Unraid is just a super file system, not some kind of mediacenter. It can deliver files to your network, but you will have to use something else to play those files.

I have written and asked about this a few times.  This is something that CAN be done with Slackware, but it would just take someone with some Linux smarts to idenfiy the right packages and procedure to get it into the slimmed down unRAID build.  Sooner or later someone is going to figure it out and post instructions IMO.  I am patiently waiting ..

Yeah, I have it streaming fine via the network and honestly was after the NAS/RAID side more than the Whole House Audio, just figured it would be nice to knock out two things at once.  I've played around with a few MediaCenter's but haven't found one that I was sold on.  Thanks for everyone's replies!! :)

The biggest hurdle is that the sound driver modules are not in the existing kernel.  (There is no /dev/audio devices)

Not sure if the sound drivers are available as loadable modules, but if not, then you might need to re-compile the kernel.

Anyone running their audio in multiple rooms?  Just wondering what's out there option wise without spending lots of $$$$!
