December 16, 201213 yr Started out just looking for a NAS (QNAP stood out) but given my requirement of transcoding I found Id need a DIY solution. Was hoping to spend under $500 but theres some flexibility (build below is $550 inc tax without drives). Minimal storage is required initially, 6 SATAs and 5 hot swap bays give plenty of expandability. Will be running Plex Server and sickbeard, etc. Multiple transcodes may be requested. Would like to keep drive costs to a minimum to start, especially with boxing day around the corner.
December 16, 201213 yr Don't forget that the parity protection mechanism that unRAID uses means that you cannot hot-swap drives within the protected array. If you were to do so then you'd need to regenerate parity after each swap, and for that period of time you'd have zero protection for any of your data.
December 16, 201213 yr I have used the hot swap ability of my server to add a new drive & start preclear on it while the server is still running. The less I have to restart it, the better. Hot swap could probably also be useful for SNAP drives (or any drive to be mounted outside the array)... have not tried that out though. S80_UK is correct that you would not want to try to remove drives in the protected array.
December 16, 201213 yr Author Was interested in the hotswap case for the simplicity of adding storage. This will be just a small home media server that ideally would never need to be opened up again. Losing the hotswap feature of the case will save under $50. Would like to run minimal drives until boxing day. 2 is the minimum (1 parity, 1 storage) ?? ( http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=593.msg3815#msg3815 <- discussion of 1 disc unRaid startup). I also didn't know that the Parity disk should be the fastest, which makes me want to wait for boxing day even moreso to grab a good parity drive Should clarify my interests here. It should start as a plex media server with transcode capabilities for a few users accessing video at a time, total storage and protection not yet important. Storage & protection will be added on boxing day.
