We celebrated Xmas early this year. And for xmas, the future wife to be bought me the Supermicro SASLP-MV8 card and an extra drive.

 

My current system has a vantec 2 port (PCI-E) which works great. I add the MV8, plug in the new drive to the MV8.

Boot up. No new drive showing. Boooooo

 

Shut down, remove the vantec, plug 2 old drives + 1 new drive into the MV8. Boot up.

Array now says disks missing. and still no new drive. Tried 2 sets of cables. No change. Tried moving PCI-E ports. Nothing.

 

/dev/md3 and /dev/md4 are missing

It's cause I should have forward breakout cables shouldn't I. >.< (no backplane. Straight to SATA drives)

 

Last year, I anticipated getting the Norco 4224. So I pre-bought the Rev/Breakout cables.

Forwards are in the mail, I just need to wait patiently.

You are correct.

 

Reverse Breakout cables: Made to go from backplane to sata ports. This cable is quite rare and used only on certain cases.

 

Forward Breakout cables: Made to go from the raid card / host controller to the drives, most raid cards come with this cable.

I wish the Supermicro did come with the Forward Cables.

 

So now.. I have a set of reverse cables (useless till I get the Norco case).

 

A set of Forwards that I ordered on November 29th, which will never get to the fiancées' place cause I forgot to put the apartment number and it's in my name.

 

So just had to re-order today. Won't get till the new year I'm sure. /cry
