December 17, 201213 yr I've been thinking about building an unraid server for 1) evaluation on the cheap, 2) small server for my parents basement. I was wondering if: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=SM-XQC20X2-PB-2R&cat=SVR Would be a viable way to play with unraid?
December 18, 201213 yr Those tiny fans just behind the trays are gon' be a loud som'bitch. If its basement home is really far from ears, then fine. If not, there are lots of low cost small form factor cases out there which would be just about the same cost. Maybe a bit more. But you need to remember the parts you'd buy here are high end server parts, overkill for basic file serving. If you were transcoding all day long, then two CPUs and all that RAM is great. But you might be buying more than is needed.
December 18, 201213 yr Author Yeah I know that 40mm fans are loud. Yes the basement is sufficiently isolated for that not to be an issue. I just like the thought of having a prebuilt server with hot-swap trays for 199. Makes it a no-brainer, and given its a SuperMicro server and all the supermicro recommendations here, seems like it should be fairly stable option. Definitely not expensive for a server board
December 18, 201213 yr It might cost more than $199 to run for 3 years though? It looks power-hungry.
