Buffering/lots of RAM

Featured Replies

I decided to go from 1GB to 4GB of RAM, to see what effect that might have on things. I didn't expect to see much, but RAM's cheap, so ...

Here's an interesting first observation: my kids know most of their movies pretty well, and oftentimes alternate between watching something and doing more worthwhile things for shorter or longer periods. If they convince us to let them watch something in the morning, they will often want to resume it in the evening, or the next time they sit down to watch something, with the result that the movie stays cached in RAM, and the HDDs stay spun down: inconsequential in the large scheme of things, perhaps, but neat nonetheless 8)

This is a pro to having lots of ram and why I went to 8GB.

Only thing now is with rTorrent running full steam.. data rarely stays in the cache. LOL.

But for the home user, I think the extra ram is worth it.
