They seem to be reliable too. I'd stick with 3 TB drives unless you really need a 4TB, but that's just me.

Down to $189 now ... anyone crack one of these open and install the drive in UnRaid?  What's the performance look like?

I bought two of these @ 169.  One was just installed as my parity drive, the other will be a data drive, but it is waiting for the parity check and recheck.

 

When cracking open the case, stand the case on the rubber feet, power/usb ports facing towards you.  Remove the left side panel.  I don't think there is a way to open it without breaking the internal case clips.

 

The drive inside is a Hitachi_HDS5C4040ALE630.  I think the performance scores for calculating parity would be more dependent on the other drives currently in the system, but currently it's at 64%, and running at 92 MB/sec in a N40L.

No you have to break all the clips to get to the internal drive. The seagate 4tb externals can easily be reused. I'm currently preclearing a few of the hitachi drives and the seagates.

Preclear took for ever on the 4gb drive. I have this one running as my parity drive now and plan on buying another to increase storage soon.

The above report was from a Hitachi HGST H3IK40003272SP (0S03355) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive, connected to a motherboard (ASUS M3A78-T) SATAII port.

 

I'm just curious how the 5400rpm drives stack up in terms of performance and temperature.

I'll confirm. to open this drive does destroy the case. I had one the 3TB versions fail on me a few weeks after I voided the warranty.
