December 20, 201213 yr Hello there hope some nice kind people can give me some clear help with this as after searching the forums and wiki im reading conflicting info. So been running my free version for about about 6 months and all has been fine but now want to buy a pro version to add more disks, the flash drive i have been using is about 6 years old and been used heavily so thought i would get a nice new drive for a pro version, so what i want to do is simply do a swap of flash drive keeping all my plugins and info test the new one for a day or two then get a pro key, seems simple but keep reading different things (see examples below) prob due to which versions it was for and if they had a key or not "prepare the flash as if it was a new install then copy contents over" "make the usb bootable (make_bootable.dat) then copy config folder" "run syslinux then copy config over" the wiki says "If you do not have an unRAID license (Plus or Pro), then it is simple. Just copy the contents, including config folder, of the current flash drive to the new and larger flash drive, and reboot with the new drive" So basically just wanted the actual steps for swapping out/replacing a flash entirely inc plugins, the wiki got me confused as it does not mention making the usb bootable but all other posts do oh and im running v5rc3 free version
December 20, 201213 yr I was in the exact same position as you a short time ago! I'm using 5.0-rc8a, though I'm not sure which version you're using? All I did was prepare the new USB flash drive as if it were a new installation - I just followed the instructions on the wiki here: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=UnRAID_Server_Version_5.0-beta_Release_Notes (including making it bootable) Once that was done, I did the following: Plugged my old USB flash drive into my laptop, and copied the entire contents to a folder on my desktop Unplugged the old USB flash drive, plugged in the new one Copied all the files from the folder on my desktop over to the new flash drive, overwriting all files Doing it this way I didn't remove any files from the old flash drive, and had a copy of the files on my laptop, just to be safe. You can then test the new one is working correctly, before you dispose of the old one. If for any reason it doesn't work, you can always just fall back to your old flash drive. Hope this helps!
December 21, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the advice have not had a chance to have a go at it today but will get on it tomorrow hopefully Update* Ok so had a play around and got it working pretty quickly and with no probs (as far as i can tell) so if anyone needs to know this is what i did, V5 free version and win7 Format flash drive name it UNRAID Copy all contents of old flash to new flash (also made a backup and stored it somewhere) Browse new flash and run "make_bootable.bat" Eject flash and stick it in the server and power on, job done
