Switching from Free to Pro Flashdrive

Featured Replies

Hello all,

this is my first post here and i may bring up an already answered question although i have not been able to find any post on my precise subject !

I am actually running UNRAID using the free version on a Sony Flashdrive.

I ordered and received the Pro Version from LT but i have no idea of the process of switching from one flashdrive to the new one.

My server is already running with two drives and a parity drive and i dont want to lose data nor settings during the process.

If anybody could explain to me the process in a step by step fashion, that would be very helpful as i am not really confident in my Linux ability, although i have been able to have the free version up and running.

Thanks a lot in advance

Philippe, Paris, France

You should have received am email from lime tech with a key file. You need to place the file on the root directory of your flash drive. So turn off the server pull the flash drive and put it on another computer and transfer the file. Or log into your server and navigate to your flash drive and copy the file over then restart the server. That's all there is to it.

Alex.vision thank you for answering.

Could you be more specific ?

As i said i am new to this kind of technology !

I received a Flashdrive with an enabled Pro software on it i suppose.

What do i do with it now that my server is running the Free version using ANOTHER Flashdrive ?

Do i use the new one and copy on it some files from the old one or what ?

Sorry for bothering but there are so many options and as i said i dont want to lose any data nor settings

Thanks again

The key is bound to the USB stick, you will need to replace your existing stick with the one you have received.

You can copy files over if required...

Tip: copy the file "Pro.key" to another location so you have a backup in case a reformat of the USB stick is required!

You can copy everthing from your old flash to the new one and boot it or you can just boot the new stick and assign the drives again and start with a fresh install keeping the data on the drives. Either way can work.

Keep the pro.key file on the new flash where it was.

Thank you all for your answers

If i start from fresh on the new Flashdrive, i assume i wil have to re-initiate the Shares and the root password, or is it saved somewhere in the computer ?

Excuse my silly questions as i am pretty newbie in this domain

All the settings of unRAID are stored in the folder "config".

When you copy that complete folder over, you will have exactly the same setup as before...

Does that mean that if if i move everything from the old Flashkey leaving the Pro.key file  untouched into the new one, everything will look the same when i will boot again ?

(except the number of drives ability)

I just copied the two Flashkeys contents on my computer for safety reasons, as advised sooner.

Should i move the files from the physical keys in a PC environment (i am running a Macmini but have Parallels with XP) ?

Again thank you for helping, i'll keep you posted when i'll do the jump ! (sometime during next week)

That's right, your system will be the same as before with the additional drives available...

You can't view or edit the key files, it really doesn't matter where you keep the copy. Just keep it safe :)

Does not matter.

OK

i tried to copy all the files from the old key except the Pro.key file in the new key using my Mac environment

All i get is a "Boot error" message

I tried copying everything from my saved copy of the Pro Flashkey in an XP environment, same Error message

When i boot from the Free key everything works allright

What should i do now ?

I need some real help here because i cannot figure out if i did something wrong or else ...

First thing I would do is stick the Pro Flash Drive I received from LimeTech in my server to make sure it boots to it.

If not, I'd check the boot order in my motherboard bios.

If everything came up ok, I'd... shut the server down & remove the Pro Flash Drive

copy the "config" file from the old flash drive to the new Pro Flash Drive

put the Pro Flash Drive back in the server

                                              fire it up !!

That's what I would do  ;)

YMMV
