January 5, 201313 yr Can someone point me to a good explaination to disk spinning up/down. Is this just for reading the disk not copying to the array? Disks spin down after a period of inactivity. (you can select the period) Disks spin up when accessed for the data on them, or when written to. There exist spin-up-groups as some disk controllers will pause/suspend all activity on a given disk while others in the same group are spinning up. This will cause a pause in music/movies being played when a disk in the same disk controller group is spinning up. For that reason, to make these "pauses" in the music less of a bother, unRAID can spin up all in a given group at the same time when any in the group are accessed. (trading power efficiency for usability) Most IDE disk controllers paired the master/slave channels as a group. Some SATA controllers have no grouping needed, others do. unRAID attempts to set these for you based on the underlying devices. It is as simple as that.
