Questions about the 20 drive budget build

Featured Replies

I'm looking at building a new unRAID server following the 20 drive budget build from here; http://greenleaf-technology.com/20-24-drive-prototypes/. But the motherboard link is dead as the board has been discontinued. I don't have much experience picking server parts and I don't want to pick an incompatible board especially as I'm planning on buying the parts from the US, and I don't want to have to return a part through international post.

I was also wondering if there is a cheaper case that supports four of the 5-bay drive cages? The Antec 1200 is currently the most expensive part on the build list and I'd rather not spend that much on a case unless there aren't any others that support four 5-bay cages.

Another question is can I buy one of the SAS cards now, and buy the second and add it at a later date? I only have the need for 8 drives currently. Fairly sure it's a yes, but I want to make sure.

Thanks for reading.

Yes. You can start with one SAS card and add more as needed.

Great, thanks.

I was thinking of going with an Intel CPU since I can't really seem to find an AMD board that would be compatible with the budget AMD CPU, include PCI ports for 2 expansion cards and VGA output. AMD seems to be the preferred option around here, is there any performance advantage or is it just preference?

I was looking at these parts to replace the AMD CPU and motherboard;

AMD is usually cheaper, I believe.  I use AMD because I have a crap ton of their products laying around.
