Upgrade questions regarding parity and cache drive

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have been using the free version of unRAID 5.0 for a while now (latest rc) and I am very happy with it. Yesterday I finally purchased a Plus license to increase capacity and would like to expand the raid now. For this I need some tips and recommendations.

I currently use 3 Samsung HD204UI (1 parity and 2 data drives). To be able to upgrade to 3TB drives in the future I would like to upgrade the current parity drive to a 3TB drive and use the old drive as data for now:

- Can you recommend any 3TB drives? (WD Green vs. Red, recent Seagates...)

- If I understand correctly upgrading the drive is mainly shutting down the array, switching drives, rebuilding parity, checking parity afterwards?

- Do I preclear the new parity drive?

- If I would like to add a cache drive, do I preclear this drive? Can I always revert to use no parity drive? (e.g. if drive bays are low)?

Thanks!

You can pre-clear any disk to insure it operates robustly and map out any bad sectors. I pre-clear disks not intended for use in unRAID.

You plan is good but run a parity check before you start as well.

Ah, ok, thanks for clearing that up!

Any recommendations for a 3TB drive?
