Help with PCI USB 3.0 card

Featured Replies

I'm trying to copy some files from unraid to a Lexar 32 usb 3 flash drive. I'm only getting an error when I attach the drive to a usb 3.0 pci card I installed, with the stock usb 2.0 ports it copies fine.

Im using snap to mount and share the drive, which is visible regardless of what speed usb port I use its only when I try to read and write do i get the input output error (5) message

The usb pci card is a addition I made to try out usb 3.0, the sys info give these details about it :

02:00.0 USB Controller: NEC Corporation Unknown device 0194 (rev 03) (prog-if 30)

Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16

Memory at fe8fe000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)

Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3

Capabilities: [70] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/3 Enable-

Capabilities: [90] MSI-X: Enable+ Mask- TabSize=8

Capabilities: [a0] Express Endpoint, MSI 00

Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting

Capabilities: [140] Device Serial Number ff-ff-ff-ff-ff-ff-ff-ff

Capabilities: [150] #18

Kernel driver in use: xhci_hcd

Any help would be much appreciated

Ok, I'm now able to read and write to the stick connected to the 3.0 USB pci card - had to just change the drive to nfts

I'm currently copying a 22gb file from the cache drive to the usb drive. The speed is hovering around 15.10MB/s at the mo, it did go upto 19MB for a second or so. I'm stumped on the speed side of things as other people seem to be getting decent speeds on USB 3.0 I'll see what I find.

I'm having no luck at all getting to the bottom of this speed problem.

Oh I also updated to 5.0-rc10 on the slim chance it might help but no joy.

Midnight Commander I tested the following

Copying from

/mnt/user/Movies/ to /mnt/disk/Lexar/            hovers around 11.43 MB/s

/mnt/disk1/Movies/ to /mnt/disk/Lexar/          hovers around 11.98MB/s

Copying from

/mnt/disk/Lexar/ to /mnt/disk1/Movies            hovers around 13MB/s

/mnt/disk/Lexar/ to /mnt/disk/user/Movies      hovers around 12MB/s

Copying from

/mnt/disk/Lexar/ to /mnt/cache/  hovers around 21MB/s

/mnt/cache/ to /mnt/disk/Lexar/  hovers around 12MB/s

I cant get any speed near USB 3.0 maybe I'm missing something and don't know it.

Heeelp:)

Is this a use case where you're going to be copying large files to a USB connected to your UnRAID server often, or is this troubleshooting mostly for academic purposes?  (Yes, it's the dreaded "Why does it matter?" question.)

Also, how are you moving the files?  If you're doing it from a Windows machine over the network then remember you're moving the files from the UnRAID Cache drive to your Windows PC and back to the USB drive connected to the UnRAID box, not directly.

Also, I wouldn't expect UnRAID to "support" USB3 at teh OS level, I would, really, expect that it'd simply treat it as USB2.0 and transfer as such.  While USB2.0 is usually capable of ~ 33MB/s with a mass storage device, I wouldn't always expect to get that.  I'm no expert, by any means, but I don't think you're seeing anything all that far out of the ordinary for such a use case, that use case being: Network accessed USB2.0 flash storage.

Yeah matguy, I often copy stuff over to USB drives for friends and stuff.

To transfer the files I telnet into the unraid and use midnight commander to copy file overs directly from the server to the USB drive.

If its a case of USB 3.0 isn't supported that's cool, but I " think " the liunx kernel in use should support it is all.
