First Unraid Build January

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Im a bit of a noob with the whole building a storage server but gonna give it a go.

Would love it if you can have a quick look over my build and give me any feedback on my choices and questions.

Much appreciated.

What is your budget?

500 AUD (without drives)

How many drives do you want your server to be able to support and how much capacity do you need?

4 drives (8TB)

Is expandability important to you?

Yes, I want to be able to expand to 6 drives (15GB total)

Are you interested in running any unRAID Add Ons (see here)?

Yes, unmenu, SABnzbd, SickBeard, and CouchPotoato

Do you want to run green/low power drives or faster 7200 rpm drives?

Happy with green/low power drives.

Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build?

Yes,

2 x Kingston 2GB DDR3-1333 (Plan to use 2 sticks from my Kingston (3 x 2GB) Triple Channel Kit that I have lying around. Don't Think I need more than 4GB.

1 x 2TB WD Caviar Green

1 x 1 TB WD Caviar Black

1 x 500GB WD Caviar Blue

1 x 2TB WD My Book Essentials. Will use this as an external drive to backup important data.

Aim for build:

- Must use low power and be cheap to run. Want to have it running 24/7

- Server to store all my movies, music, photos and any other files

- I have a XBMC PC that I would like to access the shares on my unraid server to play movies and music. (nothing too complicated). Movies are mainly just 720P and 1080P DVD rips but I would like to play Bluerays down the track.

- I want to run some Add Ons listed above.

- Want to be able to use 3TB drives.

- Needs to have GB ethernet

Build Attempt 1: Sourcing all my parts prices from PC case gear (http://www.pccasegear.com)

CPU: ($117) Intel Core i3-3220

Motherboard: ($125) ASUS P8H77-I Mini ITX Motherboard

RAM: (free) 2 x Kingston 2GB DDR3-1333 (Plan to use 2 sticks from my Kingston (3 x 2GB) Triple Channel Kit that I have lying around)

Case: ($77) Antec 300 Two (happy to have any recommendations of a smaller, cooler looking case this will all fit in)

Drive Cage(s): (NA) None required for this case

Power Supply: (??) Need help with this. I like Seasonic and Corsair brands. I also would like modular. Maybe the Corsair CX-430 V3?

SATA Ex Cards: NA Motherboard supports 6 drives

Fans: (NA) Stock CPU fan is fine.

Parity Drive: $145 1 x WD 3TB Caviar Green

Data Drives: $145 1 x WD 3TB Caviar Green + 1 x WD 2TB Caviar Green (already have)

Cache Drive: NA Dont need for now

Other Questions:

-Do I need to upgrade to a better MB that supports more 6Gb/s hdds? Will I even use the 6Gb/s speed?

-Do you recommend a particular USB stick to run unraid on?

-Some people have recommended 2x 120mm low RPM intake fans. Why is this? Stock ones too loud?

-What would be a good Power Supply for this Build? From my understanding I want something with low Watts around the 400W range as my build should only use 300W fully populated with 6 non green HDD and a bit extra for plugging in external drives for backups etc.

-If I choose to put in a cache drive later I have a 1 TB WD Caviar Black1 and 500GB WD Caviar Blue. Which one is better for this purpose?

-For my usage of this server, going for 7200 rpm drives would be a bit over the top right?

Cheers,

Matt

I was originally thinking that I would be best to go with a miniITX MB to make the server smaller and get a smaller case. Its not really one of my requirements though as its just gonna sit in another room where there is heaps of room.

Ill stick with my Antec 300 two case which will allow me to have a choice of more MB (was finding it hard to find a miniITX with at least 6 SATA).

What do you think about this MB?

ASRock Z77 PRO4-M Motherboard http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=19865

Plus it will allow me to put in an extra couple of hdds down the track.  ;)
