September 13, 200817 yr I'm planning on building a low cost unRAID and want a recommendation on the following configuration. Here's what I've planned so far: Case: Cooler Master 690 (http://www.buy.com/prod/cooler-master-690-without-power-supply/q/loc/101/206177908.html) Power Supply: Corsair TX 650W (http://www.buy.com/prod/corsair-tx-650w-atx12v-power-supply-corsair-tx-cmpsu-650tx-atx12v/q/loc/101/206178324.html). Single rail, 6 SATA power connectors. Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128342). Doesn't show up on compatibility list but others with very similar configs do so I don't expect any issues. 6 SATA, PCIe, USB, etc. Includes LAN, Video. CPU: AMD Sempron LE-1250 Sparta 2.2 GHz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103189) This is only 45 watts, and wonder if the horsepower will be sufficient. If not, I'll go with the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Brisbane 2.6 GHz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103211). Does anyone have any recommendations on whether the change in CPU performance would affect the RAID performance? I'll probably get 2Gig of RAM and a cheap USB flash drive. With 3 X 1TB Seagate Barracuda drives, the total cost would be around $700. Am I missing anything? Does anyone see any problems with this config or would some minor tweaks improve the compatibilty or performance? Thanks.
September 13, 200817 yr I see no issues. CPU is as close to meaningless as it gets, any modern proc should be fine unless you intend on running other apps on the same box. Cheap USB may not work, be careful with that. It needs a serial number and some of the cheapies don't have one. Go for a recommended USB since the price delta is minimal. Depending on the LAN on the mobo, you may want to upgrade to a better GigE. Bill
