January 10, 201313 yr Hello, I have 20 1TB hard drives all almost full in my box and would like to upgrade them all to 2TB drives. Can anyone highlight the EXACT best steps for replacing all of these drives and NOT losing the data on them during the upgrade? Thank You, Justin
January 10, 201313 yr 1 Run a parity check first (parity disk is a neccesity) 2 stop the array 3 power off 4 replace ONE drive with a precleared 2 TB drive 5 power on 6 assign the 2 TB disk 7 start the array and let the disk rebuild repeat 2-7 another 19 times.
January 10, 201313 yr and by rebuilding 1 disc at a time, your content is available during the rebuild.... Myk
January 11, 201313 yr It wouldn't hurt to do a non-correcting parity check after you replace a few disks. I always check parity after a rebuild. It's not necessary but it helps my piece of mind.
January 11, 201313 yr Parity drive should be the same size or larger than the largest data drive. So I'd make the parity the first one swapped just in case you do use the array later on while it's rebuilding the other drives.
