Hi Guys,

Spent a month now researching various options for my first NAS. From Synology, QNAP, Thecus even HP Microserver. The obvious choice for me is UnRAID because of its flexibility. My media library has really outgrown itself and I'm hoping you guys can help evaluate my build.

•What is your budget?

$500 (without drives)

•How many drives do you want your server to be able to support and how much capacity do you need?

6 Drives (11-13TB in total)

•Is expandability important to you?

My long term goal is to have a protected nas so I dont lose my media, 14TB is enough for me.

•Are you interested in running any unRAID Add Ons (see here)?

Plex Media Server

Couchpotato

Transmission

Airvideo Server

•Do you want to run green/low power drives or faster 7200 rpm drives?

WD RED's & SEAGATE GREEN's

•Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build?

Antec Earthwatts 430 PSU

LIAN LI PC-Q08B CASE

•If you already have parts in mind, please oh pretty please post links to them so that we don't have to look them up.

Complete part list:

ASUS P8H77-I $125 (6 x SATA Connections, 2x6G / 4x3G) - Uses Realtek 8111F LAN??? http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=20017

i3 3225 $135 (Integrated HD4000) http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=21886

Corsair 8GB $49 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=18373

WD RED 3TB $178 (Already own 1 x WD RED 3TB + 2 x Seagate Greens 2TB + 1 x Seagate Greens 1TB)

UnRAID Plus $69

Total $556

Already own

Antec Earthwatts 430 PSU

LIAN LI PC-Q08B CASE

So I guess the question is, hows my build? and will it be able to do everything I require it to do?

Mainly streaming BLURAY Backups to my XBMC HD 1080P Mini Machine

Plex to iOS devices at home such as iPad

Download Torrents etc

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Justin

Yes, my motherboard is similar and I can confirm that Realtek NIC works very well, running it since September and no problems at all (and no slow write problem with latest kernels, despite 8GB).

In fact I was also to get something smaller like PC-Q25 or PC-Q08 and also P8H77-I but... thinking better on it I ended choosing something bigger... Define R3... there is no limitations on PSU (at least on pc-q25 psu needs to have some max length else it will not fit the case... many psu's will not fit it if I can remember...), it is better for expanding on future, runs probably cooler and more silent, easier to build (no confusion to fit it all on small case)... but they are indeed good looking cases and if you already own it then go with it :)

I still had there two links about systems with PC-Q25 on my bookmarks, there is some photos there and info I did found interesting at the time I was choosing what to get:

Other than that differences for my system I did got G620 cpu instead (very similar to i3 2100T, but you may need more performance for the addons you pointed, I can't comment on that as I don't use them) and got CML8GX3M2A1600C9 ram, but the one you pointed is probably very similar other than the different heat spreaders.

Thanks for the confirmation guys :)

I ended up opting for the Bitfenix Prodigy case in Black, has space for 5 x 3.5" Drives.

After opening my Lian Li PC-Q08B I remembered how I did quite like the way the motherboard is mounted, everything is compact, by no means do I think its the worst design. I like the way the hdd rack is built.

Also, Im using a Antec Earthwatts EA380 PSU which is very energy efficient from what I have read.

I cant wait to get my nas up and running and once again, appreciate everyones help.
