New unRaid Build Parts....would these work...???

Featured Replies

Hello all,

New user looking to build very soon.  Plan on beginning with about 6TB storage with a Cache Drive.  Most likely run apps off Cache (SaB/Plex/Couch/etc).  The main purpose will be for Media storage (and some file backup..mainly pics).

I found this today and it seems like a good option. Lots of SATA connectors/Gigabit LAN/comes with lots of RAM and a good CPU (i hope??).

Wanted to get the advice of the Pros though.

Thoughts??

I would be worried about the power supply.  It probably has two 12v rails rather than the recommended single rail.  This means you will be limited as to the number of hard drives you can install.

I sorta knew the PSU would probally be bad....and would most likely throw that out and upgrade it....Im guess im more looking at the MoBo and CPU and RAM and CASE as the deal....for the price...seems like it would be a good deal of power right?  For the unRaid and also running apps on it...

Any thoughts from anyone on the ability of it to handle Plex transcoding...im normally an intel guy...so..my reliance on AMD is somewhat limited

Should be overkill!!!  Six cores running at 2.7Gz.  It won't even break sweat running everything!  (If you can cram everything in to run of 4GB of RAM.) Only con is that it will use more power (watts), than a processor with less capability but still with enough horsepower to do the job.

Agree...seems like overkill...but if I run Plex on it to transcode, the CPU power would be beneficial correct??

True. ( Bet CPU usage never gets to 40%.  Best example is like putting a Indy 500 engine in a Ford Pinto-- but you pay for it at the pump.)    But it is a good price for what you are getting.

You can NEVER overkill when it comes to transcoding HD video.  I have an AMD Phenom II x 4 and I still can't transcode 1080p BR rips on the fly.  I constantly consider going to an 8350 just for this reason.
