Swap-Disable with rc10

Featured Replies

I am attempting to perform a swap-disable with 5.0rc10 and I'm not sure anything is happening...

I have 4 2TB data drives and a 2TB parity drive. Disk3 of the array was showing read errors during my last parity check. I have a new 3TB drive that I would like to use as my new parity drive while at the same time replacing disk3 with the old parity drive. From my understanding, swap-disable is what I need to accomplish this.

I've removed Disk3 from the box and have placed the new 3TB drive in its place. The array is currently started and valid. From this point, what exactly do I need to do to get the swap-disable to start. I've tried stopping the array, switching the old parity drive to Disk3 and the 3TB drive to the parity slot. This results in a blue dot for Disk3 and the parity slot states "Wrong Disk". I get the option to Copy the parity to the new disk. I click yes and hit copy, but nothing happens. In fact, I can after this point, just reassign the drives to start the array again. What am I missing here?

Thanks

For 'swap disable' you want to assign your "old" parity disk to the disabled disk slot, and assign the "new" parity disk to the parity disk slot, and you should see a button that says 'Copy'.  Looks like that's what happened for you.  So in this state, after clicking Copy please capture and post the system log.

Please post updates as you work out your situation, UMD. I am about to go through the same process. My original 1TB data drive is failing, and a new 2TB drive is inbound. I intend to replace the parity (1TB) with the new drive and move the parity drive into service.

A quick question, should I pre-clear the NEW parity drive before starting the swap/disable process?

Hi have tried to go through the same process for the past couple of days but run into a strange issue... I have a 2tb drive that failed and swap-disable my 2tb parity disk with a new 3tb WD red. I have preclear the new drive 3 times but always run into a weird issue where the log tells me there is no more space left on the disk.

Here is the part of the log:

I have also attached a screenshot of my Main page showing my drives and the option to copy the parity.

Has anyone done successfully a swap-disable on unRaid 5.0rc10?

Thank you for your help,

Francois

Has anyone done successfully a swap-disable on unRaid 5.0rc10?

Yes, several times since this is some code that was changed to prevent webGui from appearing to 'hang'.  Please post entire system log.

Here is a copy of the whole log.

While copying the parity I tried to preclear the disk that failed to see what kind of SMART report I would get so that's why you have a lot of error in the middle of the second parity-swap...

Thanks for the help,

Francois

I will reattempt the swap-disable. I actually went back and rebuilt the array back on the failing drive. The drive no longer shows any pending sectors and the parity check was successful. There are some raw read errors in the smart report, so I will try the swap-disable again.

One thing I remember from the first time I tried was that I physically moved the old parity drive SATA cable to the empty slots cable and placed the new parity drive on the old drives sata cable. Could this possibly have any impact? I didn't think that physical sata slot had no impact, but maybe in this case it does?

After hitting COPY, I remember the array not doing anything. No additional entries were made in the log.

Well, I tried the swap-disable again, but nothing seems to happen after I hit the copy button.... attached is the log...

unraid_log.txt

Mine starts copying but run out of space at exactly 73%... which is very odd since I am copying a 2tb drive to a 3tb one...

Does anyone have an idea why I experience this behaviour?

Thanks,

Francois

Thank you!

I am actually running unprotected until a solution is found and I don't want to just go buy a 2tb drive to rebuild the failed one... I would rather start consolidating my storage with 3tb ones.

So anxiously waiting for your findings!

I am attempting to swap-disable a new 2TB for 1TB Parity, where my 1TB data drive has failed. I also am not able to make this happen, as it drops out before ever beginning the copy.

Not sure how to save the log to attach it. Someone tell me how and I'll post.

From the web GUI:

hit Utils

hit System Log

copy and paste contents into a text file and then post as attachment

Tried with pre cleared drive fresh from restart. Here's the log.

This one is a bug, fixed in -rc11.

Timeframe for release?? (i know almost a rude question, but drive purchase decisions need to be made....)

Thanks for staying on top of it.

Does it also fix the issue where I run out of space before finishing the copy?

Thanks,

I will try to "swap-disable" tonight with 5.0rc11 and post back how it goes.

Everything worked like a charm with 5.0rc11.

Thank you!
