setting up 2nd unraid but can't boot

Featured Replies

hey, my brothers coming up on monday, and i'm going to be setting him up with unraid, as i bought a 2nd key in anticipation he would be.

anyway, i bought a 1gig verbatim usb today, formated, put syslinux on, unziped unraid onto it. and.... nothing.... it will not boot. have re formated and reinstalled 3 times even tried the hp format utility once, and i can't get it to boot. not sure if it's something i'm missing or if the usb stick is no good?

i ran windows error checking but it said it was fine?

the label is named UNRAID, it's fat32. i have no idea what it could be. i checked the bios and it's seeing correctly as the first boot device.

my stick is a toshiba and it's working fine in my unraid computer, but put the verbatim in and nothing?

any ideas?

edit: ok it must be the usb drive, remembered i've got a 2gig verbatim (same type) that is used for just general stuff, loaded everything onto it, plus one more full format and load onto the 1gig, the 2gig loaded and the 1gig didn't.... but how strange that the drive works in the sence of being able to put the files onto it, but won't let the computer boot off it

See the tips here in the wiki: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=USB_Flash_Drive_Preparation

Many flash drives need to be formatted using the HP utility.

Many do not include a master boot record, but one can be added with the us of the "-ma" option to syslinux.

Some BIOS have a tough time booting from large size flash drives, but do fine with smaller due to their geometry.

(when the BIOS was written, Gig sized flash drives did not exist)

I'll bet your new flash drive falls into one or more category.

first try the "-ma" option to syslinux as described in the wiki.
