Motherboard with PCI-e 16x/8x for a pair of M1015 cards

Featured Replies

Trying to avoid shelling out for server components and ECC RAM as I have piles of unopened DDR3 hanging around.

Need something new off the shelf and hopefully AM3/AM2 that has a pair of PCI-e slots that can run both cards in 8x without any hiccups.

I'm just finishing building my first unRAID setup and bought the Asus Sabertooth 990fx R2.0 for it's quality and in the hopes it will run for a long time worry free.

It's socket AM3+ but it will run the pcix slots at 16x,8x,8x according to the manual.  I haven't added any extra cards so I can't speak to that.

The only quirk with it is that it won't automatically boot off the usb, when I've rebooted, it goes straight into the bios and I have to hit the enter key on the usb stick and away it goes.  I'm sure it's just a setting in the bios somewhere but I haven't had a chance to go digging for it yet.

Wow, thats a good find. Seems like a waste to use it for unraid with all the features it has but it might get the job done. Are you running any cards at 8x on it yet? Thanks.

It will require a video card if you ever need to access it via console.

I took the plunge on the SABERTOOTH 990FX... local store was discontinuing them and had them on sale. If the PCIe slots don't work in 8x with the M1015s I can at least return it.

Just waiting on a low wattage dual core AM3 CPU,  I guess on another note those seem like they are being phased out.

Might also point out that the Sabertooth 990 can apparently take ECC ram according to the manual. I'm not sure if it actually does the error-correction but it is theoretically compatible.

Fingers crossed... with the 2 cards and 8 ports on the board (and 2 eSata) this could be the one.

Even if one of the slots run at 4x that isn't a problem for the M1015s. Eight of the fastest spinning disks are not enough to saturate 4x.

Hey, have you got this all setup yet? I haven't been on here in a little while...just upgraded mine tonight to RC11 and it seems to be much quicker vs RC10.

I haven't installed any extra cards yet (so far just a simple 5 disk setup) so I can't say first hand it will work but the manual says it will.  I agree, it's a little overkill for unraid but I'm hoping that spending a few extra bucks will keep things running worry free for a long time.

I just went to the ASUS site and I see they have a Gen3 R2.0 version of this board that is different again.  Not sure which one you picked up, but I have the R2.0.  Anyway, that issue I mentioned where it wouldn't automatically boot from usb on a reboot was fixed when I updated the bios to 1302 so if you have that issue, I would look there first.

I did actually, I finally got everything working 100% in the 990 and no problems. Both M1015s run and it can probablly take a 3rd HBA card, in addition to the 8 on board ports. I wish I had of just bought this one in the first place. If I can find another one I may switch back to AMD and buy another 990 to replace my intel desktop with.

Next up is finding some ddr3 ECC RAM to test in it, apparently it will accept it but I don't know if it actually runs in ECC mode.
