Starting a new server and had some questions.

Featured Replies

Ok so I am setting up an unRaid server for the first time, I have already downloaded it and tried it out with a few spare drives I had laying around.  So I went ahead and bought a motherboard/cpu, psu, and 5 3TB HDDs to set it all up. My questions are not on hardware but more so about software or applications for unraid.

I want to use it as a file server that I can access anywhere (download and upload, upload not super important), use it as a web server just for me and my family (I like to make small sites so its easier for my family to download files that I have), I would also like to be able to access my media (movies and tv shows) outside my home network.

I don't really know the best way to go about doing all of this, so I was wondering if someone could give me a list of apps to use or a couple links to tutorials on this or whatever.

Also should I use 5.x unRaid, or 4.x unRaid?

You have to use 5.x unRaid if you want to use 3TB drives.  They are not supported by 4.x unRaid.

unRAID is designed to be used only on a LAN (Local Area Network).  It is not intended to be used on a WAN (or the Internet).  It incorporates NO security features and you will be hacked in short order if you make your server visible to the world.

Use an IPsec VPN for for secure remote access.
