January 30, 201313 yr I'm planning a build for a 4+ drive unRAID server (with room to grow) that will also run sabnzbd, sickbeard, couchpotato, and plex media server. It will need to do transcoding of 1080p content for streaming (real-time) and for syncing to devices - hence the CPU below. After lots of homework and reading on this forum here's my proposed build: CASE: GIGABYTE GZ-X5 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811233039 MOTHERBOARD: GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2P http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128504 PSU: Diablotek PHD Series PHD450 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817822002 RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314 CPU: AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103962 I would use the built-in MB SATA controller for now and will likely use a parity drive plus a cache drive. I have a 64GB SSD just sitting around unused, so if there's a good way to use that let me know. Although it seems that it may be too small for the cache. The price for the list above (no drives) is $257.95 after all of the current rebates. It seems like a good deal and hopefully the FX-6100 will give me enough power for the transcodes without being overkill - it's a really good value right now at $105. Thanks in advance for any advice!!
January 30, 201313 yr I'd spend the extra $45 bucks on this combo deal for a Core i3. It is going to run way cooler and use less electricity. And it will be more than capable of transcoding your 1080p videos on the fly. I have the last generation model of the CPU in this combo and transcode uncompressed blurays all the time with no hiccups. That AMD is overkill for what you want to do. You can also still use that RAM you have listed. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1177241 Also, I don't know about that PSU. I'd go with this Antec model. It's only $4 dollars more after rebate when you include the shipping costs of the one you list and many users on here, including myself in the past, have used the Antec Neo Eco PSU line with great results. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371031
January 30, 201313 yr Author Thanks for the quick reply. I wasn't sure if the core i3 would have enough grunt, but I'm glad to hear from someone with first hand experience. I'd definitely rather spend a little bit extra to use tried and true parts, so if that combo and PSU are working for you (and others) then I'll probably just order them. I noticed the board in that combo is ATX. Do you think I'd be better off with a micro ATX board so I have more breathing room in the case for airflow, cabling, and maybe a 3-in-2 hot swap bay in the future? Are you using a full tower or mid tower?

Are you using a full tower or mid tower? I don't think it'll make much of a difference but if you prefer mATX there is a combo with the mATX version of this board. However it doesn't have a $10 dollar rebate like the full ATX board. Here is the mATX combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1177245
