CPU upgrade question

Featured Replies

Heya all,

I'm guessing this likely isn't an unRaid issue here, but figured I'd check here 1st.

I've had my server up and running happily for quite some time now. Put Plex on a while back and still running fine.

Finally decided I needed a little more CPU, so attempted to go from the Sempron 140 SDX140HBK13GQ to a HDZ965FBK4DGM Phenom II X4 965.

Confirmed the mobo (m4a78 pro) supports it & flashed the BIOS to latest version 1701.

My problem is that the server won't boot past the mobo splash screen. Just hangs there.

I had another Phenom II X4 965 chip on one of my other PCs, so I popped that out and tried it in the unRaid server (still hangs at splash screen) and the new CPU in my PC (it worked fine). So I did confirm that the CPU is good.

Made sure to clear CMOS.

Eventually game up and popped the Sempron back in and everything boots fine.

Any thoughts from the masses as to what might be the problem & why the server won't boot past the splash screen with the new CPU?

PSU = Corsair TX650w

RAM = single stick of 2gb ocz2rpr10664gk 1066 (I also tried a pair of 2gb HYMP125U64CP8-S6-AB-C 800 sticks with same result)

mobo = m4a78 pro

old CPU = Sempron 140 SDX140HBK13GQ

new CPU = Phenom II X4 965 HDZ965FBK4DGM

Thanks!
