February 4, 201313 yr I"m on 4.5.6. I have a bunch of files that turned into .tmp files. Eveh the first name changed. Any ideas or suggestions about why, and if I can recover them to their actual file name?
February 4, 201313 yr I highly doubt unRAID did this. You either had a program access the files over the network or you installed some program on the server that did it.
February 5, 201313 yr Author I hear ya. It's strange. It's just in a specific directory tree. Nothing has been installed on the server, ever, other than the Unraid stuff. I have in the past also had some directories get renamed to jibberish names, but all files inside of the directory were in tact. Not sure what to think.
February 5, 201313 yr Years ago, I had to clean up a friend's computer that had a virus that would do those things to other computers that it had access to. You may want to do a virus scan on ALL computers on your network, including any friends or family that may periodically connect to your network. You also may want to do some internet searches to find out if you have a router that is in the list of those that also have been known to be targets of viruses. It would also be a good idea to verify that any wireless access to your network is still secure, and review any router logs, etc. to see if any unknown devices have connected recently.
July 23, 201312 yr Author Sorry. I lost track of this topic, and am slow. But I still see the issue. I have also been using the server as a server for data. But in terms of what apps access it, typically MS apps: Excel, Word. The files that typically are the ones changing to .tmp files are Microsoft Publisher files. Not much of anything else. Really strange. Oh, also, I do access it with my Android phone fairly often. Also backup software from mly PC, and Quicken.
