February 4, 201313 yr SUPERMICRO AOC-USAS-S8i vs AOC-USAS2-L8i The L8i says 8x Sata on controller but the photos are indicating 2x 8087 forward cables needed. Can someone confirm newegg made a mistake or do both cards use 2x8087 connectors? Neither one says PCI Express x 4, just PCI Express so will that make them slow? Do they need PCI-e 2.0 slots? I don't want to make a bad purchase like I'm considering returning the AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI-Express x4 Or how about the HighPoint RocketRAID 2680 SGL PCI-Express x4 Any help with these appreciated...
February 5, 201313 yr Well, my first question is: Does unRAID support the S8i? It uses an Intel IOP processor - what software driver is required? Second question: Does the controller cache make a lot of difference in a typical unRAID environment? I can guarantee that the L8i works, and works well and, yes, it does have two 8087 sockets. The Newegg webpages describe them as PCIe cards and, electrically, that is true. However, any AOC-Uxxx card is a proprietary 'UIO' card. As it comes from the factory, it will not plug in to a standard PCIe slot. My solution is to unscrew the backplate (although, I intend to make up spacers so that I can replace the backplate sometime). I deliberately chose the UIO card configuration because it places the heat-generating components on the top surface of the card when in a tower case, rather than on the lower surface as a standard PCI card would. The L8i is, actually a PCIe v2.0 x8 interface, but will work in a v1 slot and with less than 8 lanes (although there may be a degradation in performance (depending on how many lames and how fast your drives are).
February 7, 201313 yr Author I ordered the Li8 since I'm hacing trouble with the other Supermicro recommended.
