[discussion] from where should plugins pull data?!

Featured Replies

This is intended as a discussion for all plugin developers.

So lets say I write a plugin (e.g. proftpd). I need it to use an official slackware package. I do a Google search or whatever and find this nice page. There's a link to the binary package. I put it in my plugin and am happy it's not my bandwidth, what are those official repos for, anyways.  ;)

Of course I can put the package on github. If I built it from source myself and it's no official package I'll do this too, no sweat. But now github has the short stick in this and has to pay for the bandwidth. What if they get annoyed and decide to disable big binary files or raw download of those for free projects? Using official repos for unmodified packages would propably help to distribute cost better.

The best way of course would be to pickup some cash and get a paid webspace to host the packages. The problem is my cash cow looks a little skinny these days. You have one, too? Your's must be a fake one, I swear!  ;D

So what would you do fellow developers? Do I worry too much? Is either way a good way? Please let me know.

I use google code for Subsonic plugins..

but instead of "Source" section, I just added it into 'Download' page.

Works for me.
