Replicating Synology functionality with Unraid

Featured Replies

Hi All!

I was pretty decided on building an Unraid box. Then over the past couple months, I've fallen in love with the Synology feature set and user interface. Now I'm about ready to pull the trigger on my build, and I wanted to check back one last time... Is it possible to replicate all of the synology features with Unraid? Thanks!

Hi hungarianhc,

I can only speak on my behalf but I would never buy a synology or qnap branded NAS.

Your paying for the brand and that is it, the hardware is weak and outdated. unRAID does most things exceptionally and works with hardware that suits your budget.

For me, I wanted a NAS that can transcode 1080p plex media server etc and to this date bang for buck, you cannot, I repeat you cannot get a synology & QNAP nas that can do that for under $1500 and that will hit cpu peaks.

I spent $550 Australian on my entire build without drives and it barely breaks a sweat to transcode in plex.

Thats the best comparison I can make...

Now the downside is, you must be hands on. Every step has been taken to make this as simple as possible and it is but depends on you and if your prepared to learn and enjoy. The level of security in unraid is great for most people.

If you just want the basics then maybe going to a synology or qnap is the way to go... the choice is yours.

Im new here, and as reference, Im no linux expert... kind of clueless but with the help from people on this forum. I am able to achieve anything.

I agree.  If I had the money I would of gone with Synology, but Synology is expensive.  So, I decided to build my own UnRaid server.  I don't know anything about Linux, but I've learned a lot on this forum, and support is excellent.

What feature set is it exactly that you want to replicate? "all" is a big word...
