February 9, 201313 yr Hello everyone, Since this is my first post in these forums (although I've been lurking hehehe) I will start by a short intro. I live in Montreal, and work in the VFX industry. I am quite computer literate. It is not work, but it's been a serious hobby for years. I'm looking into building my first unRaid server and would love to have some feedback on my research/build so far. So here it goes. The Context My main rig is a dual boot Hackintosh (main OS is OSX ML 10.8.2 and secondary W7 mainly for gaming). Specs are not really important but what you should know is that my OSX runs on a SSD and I have a 2TB hard drive for data. This data drive is getting pretty full (mostly movies (.avi and the occasional 1080p mkv), music and a ton of RAW photos) and is not backed up (yes, I know). Thus, it has become a priority to find a solution both for disk space and protection. Enter unRAID ! My network is composed of my rig and two other OSX clients + the occasional Windows client + 1 iOS device. My rig runs Plex Media server and streams to all the clients but rarely more than two at a time. The unRAID server - Will at first have 3*2TB hard drives (1 parity/2 data. I will buy two + the data drive presently in my main computer) - Will run Plex Media Server and should be able to stream to multiple devices and transcode - I would like to torrent directly to my unRAID server (in a Downloads folder ? Is there a better way to manage files and directories than Midnight Commander. Is it a good idea to move files around via the shares ?) - Should be as low powered as possible. One of the objectives is letting my main computer go to sleep and consume less power. I cannot right now because it runs Plex and torrents so it's on 24/7.... - Because I will have a lot of untapped ressources, I will be temped to run several unRAID add ons and try out new things (web server, couch potato, ftp, etc..) The Budget So far, my Newegg.ca whishlist is 600$ (that includes 2*2TB drives and accesories like case fans and such). I would like to lower it as much as possible. Whishlist Motherboard BIOSTAR TZ77MXE http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138351 (This comes with 8GB of free good quality memory and has 6 SATA ports so I won't need to upgrade right away or buy a SATA card) PSU SeaSonic SS-300ES Bronze 300W http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151085 CPU Intel Core i3-3220 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116775 HDD 2*Western Digital Red WD20EFRX 2TB http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236343 CASE I already own a unused Antec 300 So, this is pretty much it for now. Looking forward to reading your comments ! Cheers !
