My Build - Comments on hardware plz?

Featured Replies

Im building my unRaid Server...finally...

Its purpose will be simply to house my movie files for XBMC (BluRay rips, mostly mkv) and to be a storage server for pics and other various files.

Will be running SAB/Couchpotato/Sickbearb

Would like to look into running additional plugins such as ownClound, Web Server, Plex (maybe), Handbrake, etc.

Here is the hardware Ive chosen for price and effeciency

MoBo: AsRock

CPU: AMD  A4 Trinity A4-5300

RAM: 4 gig

PSU: Corsair CX500

Case: ? Empty box i have around

HDD:

WD Red 3TB x 3(1 Parity, 2 Storage)

WD 500GB Cache

Thoughts???Im welcome to all comments'

Many Thanks!

Any reason you picked an APU besides price? An APU is worthless in a situation like this. All it's doing is generating heat and using electricity.

its a 65watt CPU....picked it as it has some power, low wattage, and cheap in $$$

Suggestions??

Looks like the only AMD chips without the GPU in that price are last gen 45nm Athlon X2s so they probably idle using the same amount of power as the one you chose.

Would it be a better design if it were a corei3???

The other reason I really liked the list above was that the MoBo was cheap, and offered 6 SATAIII (6GB/s)

But, if there is no real advantage to the 6GB/s in the unraid build, then i have a backup design that invovled a core i3 with a MobO with 6 SATA 3GB/s

still plan to use the WD Red Drives 3TB which are 6GB/s, but if theres no real perforamnce loss, then Id be OK with that..

THoughts???

Non-SSD hard drives won't even hit SATA 1.5Gb/s speeds let alone SATA 6Gb/s. I would personally go with the i3. It's going to run cooler and it's a hell of a lot faster than the AMD. PassMark CPU score of ~4000 for the i3 vs. ~2000 for the AMD.

Just to confirm.....HDD with Sata 6GB/s interface will work on a MoBo with SATA 3GB/S interface correct?

I know this is a YES...just making sure im not crazy.
