Feedback on first build?

Featured Replies

I have put together a setup based on a number of other peoples builds as well as what I believe would suit my own requirements. I am after some feedback as to whether all the components are compatible and that the system will do what I want it to do. Thanks in advance.

Budget?

Not made of money, but I have no problem spending a little extra to make the system last.

How many drives?

Starting off with two 2 tb drives, adding more as required. No more than 8 I would say.

Expandability?

Yes I would like to gradually add more drives to the system as I rip more blu rays.

Add ons?

Support transcoding for Subsonic, Dropbox and uTorrent. Potentially more in the future.

Do you want to run green/low power drives or faster 7200 rpm drives?

Green drives.

Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build?

No spare parts.

Case: NZXT H2 mid tower

Power Supply: Seasonic X-Series 560W PSU – 80 Plus Gold

Motherboard: Supermicro x9scm-f

CPU: Intel Core I3 3220/3.30GHz

Memory: Kingston 1333MHz 8GB DDR3 ECC CL9 DIMM(Kit of 2) w Th.Sens [KVR1333D3E9SK2/ 8G]

Parity/Data Drives: 2 x Western Digital 3.5” 3 TB HDD

Flash Drive: Patriot Supersonic Pulse 8GB

A cache drive and unRAID licence will be added later when I expand.

Looks good. Go for some 1600MHz RAM, which is the fastest speed that processor supports.

First of all, I was under the impression that for the average person there would not be a noticeable difference. Do you disagree?

Anyway after a little hunting around I came across some 1600MHz ram for a similar price.

Kingston 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 ECC CL11 DIMM [KVR16E11/4]

Is this ram also compatible if I were to get a couple of sticks. Also is it even worth the extra few dollars for a couple of sticks over my previously selected ram?

Cheers

You probably would not see a whole lot of difference but if there isn't much price difference why not?

Yes, that RAM will work. I have two 8GB sticks of that same model in my server now.
